Gertrude Abbott


Gertrude Abbott was the founder of the former St Margarets Hospital in Sydney, Australia. It was a major maternity hospital in that city for much of the 20th century.

Abbott was born Mary Jane OBrien in 1846 in Sydney, to Thomas and Rebecca OBrien. In 1848, her family moved to Dry Creek, South Australia, where her father was a schoolmaster and later became a farmer.
